It is mostly present in the shaft portion of a person’s long bones, such as the bones found in the arms and legs. Cortical bone (called compacta) is essentially solid, with a porosity of approximately 5%. The osteon, often termed the primary structural unit of cortical bone, is a cylindrical structure in which a central canal containing blood vessels is surrounded by 20 to 30 concentric lamellae (Jee, 2001). Compact bone, also called cortical bone, dense bone in which the bony matrix is solidly filled with organic ground substance and inorganic salts, leaving only tiny spaces (lacunae) that contain the osteocytes, or bone cells. The outer shell of compact bone is called cortical bone or cortex. It is formed by compact bone which is one of the two macroscopic forms of bone, the other being cancellous bone. Cortical bone is a compact type of bone tissue.

Cortical bone is a compact type of bone tissue. This type of bone is denser than other types and accounts for up 80 percent of the weight of a human’s skeleton. It is mostly present in the shaft portion of a person’s long bones, such as the bones found in the arms and legs. The underlying microstructure of cortical bone is quite complex. It is not solid, however, and has tiny passages so that nerves and blood vessels can travel through. It also contains cells that maintain and repair the bones. What Is Cortical Bone Made Of? Cortical bone is the dense outer surface of bone that forms a protective layer around the internal cavity. This type of bone also known as compact bone makes up nearly 80% of skeletal mass and is imperative to body structure and weight bearing because of its high resistance to bending and torsion.
